American Christopher Eubanks’ storybook run at Wimbledon 2023 continued on Monday afternoon when he pulled off an emphatic win over the No. 5 seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.
Going toe-to-toe for three hours with Coco Gauff in attendance, Eubanks — the 6-foot-7 power hitter recorded 13 aces — returned a backhanded shot down the line to win the match.
He momentarily pumped his fist and threw his white sweatband to the ground with the realization that he had just made the Wimbledon quarterfinals. He then circled around the court, soaking up the standing ovation and applause from the Wimbledon fans in Court 2.
The Atlanta native has played in nine major tournaments in his career, never making it past the second round. He was ranked 123rd coming into 2023 and is now the only American remaining in the Men’sSsingles.
“I feel like I’m living a dream right now,” Eubanks said. “This is absolutely insane. When you play the whole of the concept, I’ve tried so much to block everything out and just focus on the next match, as cliche as it sounds… It’s surreal, I can’t believe all of this.”
The Georgia Tech grad has pulled off some huge underdog victories throughout his Wimbledon journey this summer, making him a fan favorite and rising star of the tournament.
At 27, he won his first tournament on the ATP Tour in Mallorca just one week ago. His road to the quarterfinals includes a win over the highest-seeded Brit, Cam Norrie (No. 12), and now the fifth seed, Tsitsipas in five sets.
