Friends mourn Schenectady mother who loved to grill for a crowd

SCHENECTADY – Philomen “Toy-Toy” Henry was an energetic 30-year-old woman looking forward to the future and new beginnings with a smile that never seemed to fade, family and friends said.

“So much life ahead of me Y be worried about what’s behind me,” the mother of two young children posted May 21 on her Facebook page, typing the words against a background of red and violet colored hearts.

Less than a day later, police found her fatally shot inside a Mont Pleasant apartment. A city police spokesman said the investigation into her death is ongoing with no sign of significant developments likely in the immediate future.

Police responded to the two-family home at 953 Crane St. at 11:11 a.m. to check on a tenant and found the body of a woman they later identified as Henry.

No one else was inside the apartment, which is located next to a bank at the busy intersection of Main Avenue.

Henry’s cousin Tricia Pedro recalled telling mourners during welcoming remarks at Henry’s June 5 funeral to “put on your best Toy-Toy smile because she always had this beautiful smile.”

No matter the weather or time of year, Henry loved to fire up the grill and blast music, she said.

Her friend Amber Nesbitt remembered being awakened at 7 a.m. last year, and not really taking it too seriously when Henry announced she was getting ready to do some grilling.

Several hours later, Nesbitt, 29, said she called Henry back to see how it was going.

“She was like, ‘everybody already came and got they hamburgers,’ so she pretty much fed all her friends at eight o’clock in the morning with grilled cookout food because she was thirsty to get on the grill,” added Nesbitt. “If you had a 70-degree day or a winter day, she probably was going to probably try to find a way to grill, she’ll pull out a little grill and put it on her porch.”
