Riverside Opera Company presents ‘Black Voices’ at a free concert staged at Conference House Park Saturday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Riverside Opera Company will host “Black Voices” a free concert Saturday, July 15, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Conference House located at 7455 Hylan Blvd. in Tottenville.

Featured performers for the afternoon will be vocalist/entertainer Jeannine Otis and her trio, Chris Almeida on drums, Bim Strasberg on bass, Larry Luger on guitar, and Yuuki Koike on flute.

In addition, baritone Dorian Lake and guitarist and vocalist Ayodele Maakheru will perform.

On tap will be a tribute to singer/songwriter and civil rights activist, Harry Belafonte.

The concert is sponsored by the Conference House, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and Northfield Bank.

Born and raised in Detroit and based on Staten Island, Jeannine Otis has been a voice for decades. She draws equally from jazz, classical, dance, gospel and pop genres.

A graduate of Wellesley College — she’s a Presser Music Scholar, the only African-American to win that award — she also holds a masters degree from Emerson College in Boston, where she was a teaching fellow.

She has toured as a vocalist with many artists, including Donald Byrd, Grover Washington Jr., Vishnu Wood, and Arthur Prysock.

Organizers ask that that guests bring lawn chairs.

ABOUT RIVERSIDE OPERA COMPANY

Founded in 1996, the Riverside Opera Company (ROC) is the longest-running and only opera company on Staten Island. ROC performs fully and semi-staged productions with full orchestra conducted by Maestro Alan Aurelia, who has conducted in Italy as well as in the U.S.
