Washington – Rep. Brandon Williams is recovering today at St. Joseph’s hospital in Syracuse after undergoing successful heart bypass surgery, according to a hospital official.
Williams, 56, was in surgery for more than six hours for a minimally invasive operation, his spokesman said.
Williams was transferred Tuesday to the St. Joseph’s Health Cardiovascular Institute after an examination at Crouse Health, said Meredith Price, senior vice president of acute operations at St. Joseph’s.
“This morning, our talented team of surgeons, nurses, and support staff performed a robotic heart bypass procedure, and we are pleased to say that it went exceptionally well,” Price said in a statement.
A spokesman for Williams did not say how long the congressman would remain hospitalized after the surgery, nor the circumstances that led doctors to recommend the surgery.
“Congressman Williams is now on the road to recovery in large part because of the minimally invasive treatment methods used by the cardiac surgeons at St. Joseph’s, which allow for faster healing, less pain and less scarring,” Price said.
Seth Kronenberg, president and CEO of Crouse Health, said in a statement that the hospital’s interventional cardiology team provided medical care to Williams before he was transferred to St. Joseph’s.
Kronenberg said Williams will share additional details about his specific condition in the coming days.
Taylor Weyeneth, a spokesman for Williams, said Tuesday that the congressman would miss votes in Washington after a routine doctor’s appointment found “an important medical issue.” He said Williams expected to return to work in a few days.
Williams, R-Sennett, was elected in November to represent the 22nd Congressional District. The district spans all of Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties and the southeastern tip of Oswego County.
