ALBANYย โ Golden Rule Peace Boat, which is today โsailing for a nuclear free world and a peaceful, sustainable future,โ visited Albany this week.
In 1958, four Quaker peace activists sailed the Golden Rule toward the Marshall Islands to try to stop thermonuclear weapons testing. The U.S. Coast Guard boarded her in Honolulu and arrested her crew, causing an international outcry, according to Golden Rule crew members and supporters. They said the arrests and rising awareness of the dangers of radiation and nuclear war led to worldwide demands to stop nuclear testing and spurred the U.S., U.S.S.R. and U.K. to sign the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963.ย
In 2010, the Golden Rule was rebuilt in Humboldt Bay, Calif.
During the Albany visit, the boat was docked on the Hudson River in Albany next to Dutch Apple Cruises and the USS Slater. A potluck dinner at Albany Friends Meetinghouse on Madison Avenue and talks by crew members and a film about the Golden Rule were scheduled for Wednesday night.
