Chenango Forks, N.Y. — Police agencies are continuing their search into the night Wednesday for a man who may be armed in the Chenango Forks area in Broome County, state troopers said.
Police were called around noon to the man’s home for a welfare check, Trooper Aga Dembinska, a state police spokesperson, said. He was last seen on state Route 79 before fleeing to a wooded area, she said.
Police shut down Route 79 between Richards Road and NY-369 for hours as they searched.
By 9:30 p.m. the road was reopened but police are continuing to search.
The man may be a threat to himself and others, troopers said. He’s described as being 6-feet and 1-inch tall, weighing 275 pounds, has dark hair and is heavy-set.
He was last seen wearing a black shirt and light-colored pants or shorts. He may be wearing glasses.
Police are asking anyone who sees him to call 911 and to not approach him.
Troopers are urging residents in the area to stay inside and to keep doors and vehicles locked.
