WNY will open its first licensed cannabis dispensaries next week

At long last, Western New York will get its first state-licensed cannabis dispensaries.

Herbal IQ has been given the final clearance from the Office of Cannabis Management to open its doors July 21 at 6055 Transit Road in Depew. It was formerly home to Classic Cue Billiards & Supplies, a pool hall.

Dank, at 501 Main St., will open the following day. That location was formerly the site of soup and wine bar Brodo.

โ€œWeโ€™re stoked,โ€ said Michael Ortiz, chief operating officer of Herbal IQ. โ€œWe are ready to go.โ€

Aaron Van Camp, owner of Dank, said he is โ€œrelieved.โ€

The change is all the more devastating to small pot operators by the state’s slow rollout of its legal cannabis dispensary program.

โ€œThat will be the key word,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s been a very long time up until today.โ€

Recreational dispensary owners have been put through the wringer as theyโ€™ve waited for the state to roll out licensed sales in the state โ€“ a process that was delayed by a federal lawsuit.

โ€œNew York needs legal recreational marijuana. Itโ€™s been a long time coming,โ€ Van Camp said. โ€œItโ€™s something that should have gone on years ago but weโ€™re happy to be a part of having it now.โ€
