Syracuse, N.Y. — Four people were treated for smoke inhalation and a dog died Thursday after a fire broke out in an apartment at the Ross Towers, a high-rise apartment building in Syracuse.
The fire was reported around 2:46 p.m. on the 10th floor of Tower B at 710 Lodi St., said Capt. Matt Craner, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Fire Department.
Firefighters saw heavy black smoke on the 10th floor filling halls and entering the stairways, Craner said.
Firefighters searched for the source of the smoke through multiple apartments and had to escort out residents who stayed inside, Craner said. The fire was found in Apartment 1008, which had two people inside and two dogs, he said.
The two people and one dog were taken to safety. The other dog died, Craner said.
The fire did not spread from the apartment. It had heavy smoke, fire and water damage, Craner said.
Three people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Another person was taken to a hospital for treatment, he said.
Investigators are working to determine how the fire started.
Ross Towers has two high-rise buildings with 160 apartments. It is operated by the Syracuse Housing Authority.
