As residents of Ontario County grapple with the aftermath of historic flooding, local officials have provided an update on recovery efforts, further preparedness measures, and assistance for those affected. The flooding event, which began on Sunday, July 9th, has seen a robust response from Ontario County, New York State, and local municipal partners, with efforts still ongoing.
Power has been successfully restored to nearly all affected homes, officials confirmed today. The cleanup process continues, with residents working tirelessly to clear debris and demolish damaged portions of their homes. This colossal task is being eased by the support of neighbors and a variety of non-profit volunteer organizations that have rallied to help those impacted.
As meteorologists predict further precipitation for Canandaigua and its surrounding areas over the weekend, officials are preparing to mitigate any potential damage. Ontario County and the City of Canandaigua are providing sandbags for residents at the City of Canandaigua School District Administrative Building, located at 143 North Pearl Street. The availability of sandbags will continue until supplies are depleted. Additionally, pallets of sandbags have been deployed in the residential areas that were most significantly affected by the flooding.
Officials have also shared updates on local beaches based on the latest water sampling tests. While the beaches at Butler Road, Onanda Park, and Deep Run Park in the Town of Canandaigua have been declared safe and are now open to the public, the City of Canandaigua beach at Kershaw Park remains closed.
