The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday that two inmates, including an Auburn man linked to a 2019 murder, were arrested for possession of contraband within the county jail.
Gage Ashley, 25, of Auburn, and Cory Smith, 42, of Union Springs were both charged on Tuesday with second-degree promoting prison contraband, a misdemeanor.
The Sheriff’s Office did not specify the nature of the contraband. Both men remain incarcerated on unrelated charges and are set to appear in the Town of Sennett Court for these recent cases.
Ashley, previously convicted for the November 2019 murder of 36-year-old Joshua A. Poole, had his conviction overturned earlier this year due to an illegally constituted grand jury. Originally sentenced to 21 years to life in prison for first-degree murder, among other charges, his case was dismissed without prejudice, allowing for a fresh indictment. He was re-arraigned last month on charges including first-degree murder and first-degree attempted robbery, pleading not guilty to all counts. Ashley is currently held without bail.
Smith, the second inmate found with contraband, was previously arrested in March on charges of first-degree criminal contempt and second-degree criminal impersonation. Further details regarding his case remain undisclosed.
