However, Democrats, including Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D- NY) and Rep. Cori Bush (D- MO), reject the deadline as arbitrary, suggesting a resolution that recognizes the ERA as an existing law. Gillibrand emphasized that a single additional signature could “constitutionally prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex,” and prevent further infringements on constitutional rights.
