Teenager drowns near Buffalo at popular Lake Erie beach

Blasdell, N.Y. — A teenager drowned Monday while swimming at a popular Lake Erie beach in the Buffalo area.

Aiden R. Walden, of Lackawanna, went swimming around 5:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Beach State Park in Blasdell with another teenager, the New York State Police said. Walden could not keep his head above water, troopers said, and went under.

Beachgoers pulled Walden out of the water and tried to revive the teenager, troopers said. The Woodlawn Fire Company responded to the beach and took over, working to save Walden.

Walden was rushed to Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, where he was pronounced dead. He was 16 years old.

Woodlawn Beach, at 3580 Lake Shore Road, is a short drive south of Buffalo. The popular beach has a mile-long sandy beach and a boardwalk through wooded wetlands.
