Cayuga County Clerk Sue Dwyer and Sheriff Brian Schenck announced a new initiative aimed at aiding the successful re-entry of incarcerated individuals into the community. The program, created through a partnership with the Cayuga County Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Custody Division, facilitates the issuance of state identification cards and licenses to individuals upon their release from jail. The initiative is funded through the incarcerated individuals’ commissary funds, ensuring no additional costs to local taxpayers.
NYS DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder endorsed the initiative, stating the importance of valid photo ID in the successful reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals. Such identification, he stressed, is crucial for accessing essential services, housing, and employment, and its availability can significantly reduce the likelihood of recidivism. The commissioner lauded the efforts of County Clerk Sue Dwyer and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office in implementing this crucial initiative.
