Extra Extra: Trouble for legal cats and illegal lizards in NY

It’s Friday afternoon in New York City and I have some bad news: New York is not ranked as one of the top 10 states to live in.

We don’t necessarily need the praise, we get enough of it elsewhere, but our tristate neighbors do need some love, and they DID make the list. Both New Jersey and Connecticut were ranked as number 3 and 10, respectively.

Here’s what else is happening:

  • Animal Care Centers of NYC, the only open admissions animal shelter system in the city, is at critical capacity and no longer doing new cat intake.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is concerned about a tick-borne illness that causes a red-meat allergy.
  • If you’re looking to beat the heat, stay away from Midtown Manhattan, if you can. The amount of concrete in the neighborhood outnumbers trees making it the city’s hottest area.
  • Remember that Long Island guy who’s in trouble for his quasi-legal sloth encounter business? Well, he was also fined for bringing venomous lizards to New York.
  • A Rikers Island detainee allegedly got his hands on a Correction Department uniform and pretended to make his rounds, the Daily News reported.
  • If the state of the climate is making you nervous, you’re not alone. Climate conservation groups have become a place to express those feelings amongst fellow anxious people.
  • And if you need some escapism from our new climate reality, how about a trip to the Times Square Margaritaville? If not in person, at least virtually.
