An officer at Elmira Correctional Facility was assaulted by a 24-year-old inmate serving an eight-year sentence for gang assault, leading to hospitalization for the officer, according to the New York State Officers & Police Benevolent Association, Inc.
The incident occurred on July 21 when the officer opened the inmateโs cell for morning medication. Ignoring orders to exit the gallery or return to his cell, the inmate punched the officer multiple times in the face, which prompted a second officer to intervene and subdue the inmate.
The injured officer was treated for swelling and bleeding from his nose and neck pain, before being transported to Arnot Ogden Medical Center. The second officer, who suffered upper arm pain, remained on duty after receiving medical treatment. The inmate, previously convicted in 2022 for a violent gang assault in Westchester County and serving a previous two-year sentence for robbery in 2018, was moved to a Special Housing Unit after the attack.
