Pittsford, N.Y. — For a few minutes in the final team period of Buffalo Bills training camp practice on Monday afternoon, the fans in attendance looked panicked.
The Bills ran a trick play that resulted in quarterback Josh Allen attempting to catch a pass in the end zone. Cornerback Taron Johnson tried to defend the pass and smashed into Allen, landing awkwardly on Buffalo’s franchise quarterback.
Allen took a few moments before he returned to his feet. When he did it appeared as if he had a slight limp. He walked back to where the offense was standing around the 30 yard-line before the Bills ended practice minutes later. Allen walked off the field and said that he was all right after passing a few members of the media. He went on to sign autographs for a few minutes, walked back toward the locker room, and even did a CBS interview.
Allen was locked in all afternoon for the first padded practice of Bills camp. The offense was humming throughout the day and kept the defense off balance as Allen spread the ball around to his favorite targets.
Stefon Diggs had another excellent day, getting the offense amped up and bringing a different level of energy to practice. It started early in practice when he locked up with second-year cornerback Kaiir Elam in 1-on-1s. Elam played him tight and Allen threw an incompletion. On the way back, Diggs and Elam exchanged some words and then Diggs went up against Elam against on the next rep. Diggs burned him and then talked some more trash as the period ended.
Diggs had a few highlight plays on the day, including a moonshot touchdown pass from Allen (well, it probably would have been a TD in a game). Diggs beat Dane Jackson easily and Allen put the ball in a perfect spot for Diggs to make a play on it. Micah Hyde had to recover quickly and try to get his hands on Diggs. The play ended around the goal line.
