Missing 27-year-old’s body found in Newtown Creek weeks after another man discovered there

A 27-year-old banker was found dead in Newtown Creek on Tuesday morning after he was last seen at a nearby nightclub four days earlier, police said.

John Castic, who was a senior analyst at Goldman Sachs according to his LinkedIn page, was last seen attending a concert at the Brooklyn Mirage nightclub in Bushwick at 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, police said. Police reported Castic missing on Monday.

At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, police received a call of a body floating in Newtown Creek near 1100 Grand St., less than half a mile away from the Brooklyn Mirage. NYPD Harbor Units were sent to recover the body, which police later identified as Castic.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the cause of death.

Earlier this summer, the body of Karl Clemente, who was last seen outside the Brooklyn Mirage on June 11, was also found in Newtown Creek, according to police.

NYPD investigations are ongoing in both cases.

The Brooklyn Mirage is an outdoor concert venue located within the venue Avant Gardner, which has been in a near-constant battle with the State Liquor Authority. More than 1,600 people were treated for intoxication from 2018 to 2022, and three people attending separate events died of accidental drug overdoses between 2017 and 2021.
