Nottingham graduate Derrick Gore signed with the Washington Commanders earlier this week, putting him in training camp in a familiar offensive system.
In joining Washington, Gore will be paired up again with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator in Kansas City when Gore last played in the NFL in 2021.
He spent 2022 as a practice squad player with the New Orleans Saints but was waived in May.
Gore is part of Washington’s 90-man roster. The team can only carry 53 players on their main roster into the regular-season, along with 16 players on a practice squad.
Gore’s road from Syracuse to the NFL was a difficult one. He began his college career playing community college football, walked on at the University of Alabama and then transferred to Louisiana-Monroe. After going undrafted in 2019, he spent two years on practice squad and offseason rosters before getting his chance to suit up for Kansas City.
He rushed 51 times for 256 yards that season, along with catching eight passes for 105 yards.
Gore is one of four former Kansas City players that have signed with Washington, as Bieniemy has sought to bring in familiar players.
BienIemy joined the Commanders after helping the Chiefs to two Super Bowls in the past four years.
While Bieniemy’s reputation as a talented offensive mind has grown from that success, Washington offers him the chance to be the primary play-caller and prove that his magic extends beyond his pairing with head coach Andy Reid.
Washington’s running back committee is led by second-year pro Brian Robinson. The Commanders return backup Antonio Gibson and used a sixth-round pick on former Kentucky star Chris Rodriguez. They also have a second-year player in Buffalo’s Jarett Peterson.
In addition to his familiarity with Bieniemy’s scheme, Gore’s strengths also include his ability to contribute on special teams.
