Recent full moon will continue to affect Staten Island coastal flooding, says NWS

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Minor coastal flooding is again expected to affect Staten Island’s coastline Thursday night, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood statement in effect from 8 p.m. on Thursday until midnight, following an identical statement for coastal flooding that was issued for late Wednesday night. The agency said the pattern is affected by the recent full moon.

Coastal flood statements differ from coastal flood advisories, with the latter considered a starker warning for rising water levels. Coastal flooding mostly affects low-lying ground, including streets, pushing water into neighborhoods by the shoreline.

Parts of Queens will be under a coastal flood advisory Thursday night. Brooklyn joins Staten Island as falling under the umbrella of a coastal flood statement. Up to one foot of inundation above ground level is forecast in vulnerable areas near the waterfront, said the National Weather Service.

Officials urge motorists to avoid driving through flooded roadways.
