Yankees’ Nestor Cortes can be savior in starting staff … and he knows it

NEW YORK — While tethered to the injured list for two-plus months, Nestor Cortes watched helplessly from the sidelines as the Yankees’ starting rotation unraveled.

Luis Severino has a 9.12 ERA since the day Cortes was placed on the IL, back on May 30. Carlos Rodón has yet to earn his pinstripes, posting a 6.29 ERA after emerging from his own extended stay on the injured list. And then there’s Domingo Germán, the right-hander that erased all of his highs — including perfection — with a clubhouse incident involving alcohol abuse, abruptly ending his season.
