Severe storms spawned several possible tornadoes in Upstate NY

Syracuse, N.Y. — Severe storms slammed Upstate New York on Monday, flooding roads, downing trees and spawning at least three suspected tornadoes.

The National Weather Service will send survey crews to Cortland and Vernon today to determine if damage was caused by tornadoes or straight-line winds.

A tornado likely struck near Whetstone Gulf State Park, in Lewis County, and crossed Route 12, the weather service office said. Multiple trees were snapped off, according to reports submitted to the weather service.

The storms also brought heavy rain. Flooding closed Interstate 690 in both directions in the town of Van Buren Monday night. I-81 remained closed this morning in Cicero, and several roads are still impassable in Van Buren.

Syracuse set a daily rainfall record Monday of 2.45 inches. The previous record for Aug. 7 was 1.69 inches, set in 1976.

In Elbridge, a trained spotter recorded 4.46 inches of rain, the weather service said.

New York was at the northern edge of a massive and damaging weather system that spanned from Tennessee to Upstate New York. At least two people were killed, one each in Alabama and South Carolina, and did extensive damage across the South and mid-Atlantic.
