Dutchess takes ‘next critical steps’ to address homelessness

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County is taking several steps to continue its efforts to address the local impact of the national plight of homelessness. They include an evidence-based approach, the establishment of a permanent emergency housing facility, and comprehensive wrap-around services to help people move from homelessness to independence as quickly as possible.

The county has outlined its next steps to include recruitment for a new county shelter director position to oversee emergency shelter operations and accompanying wrap-around services, including contracted service oversight.

It will also issue a request for expressions of interest from qualified organizations to manage the day-to-day operations of the emergency housing facility.

County officials said construction design is about to begin for a temporary location for emergency shelter operations at the Dutchess County Jail once it is vacated.

And the county is applying for $15 million from the state to establish a permanent location for the emergency shelter.

County Executive William O’Neil has also begun talks with the governor’s office about opportunities with the state to create housing at the former Hudson River Psychiatric Center property.
