Syracuse man’s murder conviction was overturned but he still faces legal troubles

Syracuse, N.Y. — A Syracuse man had his 1990 murder conviction overturned Thursday after serving 31 years in prison, but he remains in jail on different charges.

Carlton Lewis, 56, was convicted of murder in 1990 for the sexual assault and bludgeoning of Cheryl Coleman inside an abandoned home on South Salina Street. He served more than three decades in state prison and was released on parole in November 2021, according to state inmate records.
