Fugitive killed, police dog shot in Upstate NY shoot-out, troopers say

Russell, N.Y. — A fugitive was killed and a police K-9 was wounded during a shoot-out in the North Country, troopers said.

The deadly shooting happened Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area in St. Lawrence County, the New York State Police said in a news release.

The state police and the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office were searching for a “wanted fugitive” in a wooded area along Donnerville Road in Russell when the suspect fired at a trooper and his K-9 partner, troopers said. The K-9 was shot; the trooper was not injured, troopers said.

The suspect was then shot and killed by a state trooper, troopers said.

No information about the suspect or what the suspect was wanted for were immediately released. The trooper who fatally shot the suspect was not named.

The K-9 was rushed to a veterinary hospital for treatment, troopers said. It was not clear how seriously the dog was wounded.

“More details will be released as they become available,” troopers said.
