Former President Donald Trump, along with 18 of his associates, was indicted Monday in Georgia for alleged efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis announced the charges, invoking a racketeering statute typically used against mobsters. The indictment accuses Trump and his team, which includes ex-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, of a criminal endeavor to maintain his presidency.
Among the charges are endeavors to sway Georgiaโs Republican secretary of state to find votes in Trumpโs favor and plotting to access and steal data from voting machines.
The indictment adds to Trumpโs legal woes, marking his fourth criminal case in five months and coming two weeks after a special counsel charged him in a conspiracy to overturn the election. Trumpโs team criticized the integrity of the investigation and dismissed the charges as politically driven. The case underscores extensive efforts allegedly made by Trump and his allies to challenge the legitimacy of the 2020 election results.
