NY cop uses SUV to hit woman waving gun in intersection, video shows

A New York cop used an SUV to hit a woman waving a gun in an intersection, according to video and multiple reports.

PIX-11 reports a Nassau County police officer drove a vehicle into a 33-year-old woman holding a gun in North Bellmore, Long Island, on Tuesday afternoon. Police said she allegedly fired a single shot in the air before walking into the intersection of Bellmore and Jerusalem avenues, pointing the gun at others and herself.

โ€œItโ€™s a loaded handgun that sheโ€™s waving around in the traffic, pointing at people that have got their children and their families in their cars,โ€ Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

Video shows a Nassau Police vehicle striking the woman after she attempted to jump out of the way; she was sideswiped and knocked to the ground. She dropped the firearm but appeared to reach for it before being tackled by an officer.

The woman was placed in handcuffs and arrested.

According to the New York Post, she suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. She remains in police custody.

The officer who hit her with the patrol vehicle was also hospitalized for trauma, the Post reported.

Ryder praised the โ€œheroโ€ police officer for using the SUV to neutralize the threat while facing deadly physical force against civilians and themselves.

โ€œOther option on the table is to take out the gun and shoot her. They didnโ€™t do that. They chose an alternative option that they thought quickly to react and probably saved peopleโ€™s lives, including their own, from any further injuries,โ€ Ryder said.

A witness who lives in the neighborhood agreed.

โ€œI thought it was brilliant that they guy knocked her down to at least get her under control. It was a great move,โ€ Ellen Zainfeld told NBC New York.

The woman has not been identified. Police have not said what led to the incident, but News 12 Long Island reported authorities were still searching the scene for evidence…
