The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association (CLWA) reported no detections of harmful algal blooms in Canandaigua Lake as of the week ending Aug. 11.
Although a few sightings of mildly greenish waters were reported by residents on the lake’s east side, there is no cause for alarm. As the month of August progresses, CLWA emphasized that they have engaged trained volunteers and watershed staff to vigilantly monitor water quality conditions, given that these conditions can fluctuate on a daily or even hourly basis. “We encourage everyone to be observant and look for any unusual appearances in the water, such as surface streaks or a dense, pea soup-like consistency,” stated CLWA Board of Directors President, Lynn Klotz.
Moreover, Klotz highlighted the association’s commitment to updating the public promptly on any harmful algal bloom (HAB) developments through various platforms, including e-newsletters, social media, and the CLWA website. In addition to their environmental monitoring, CLWA also announced the annual “Ring of Fire” event scheduled for 9 p.m. on Sept. 2. This traditional event, which pays homage to the Seneca Nation’s ritual of expressing gratitude for plentiful harvests, aims to foster unity among lakeside residents. Participants are urged to use LED flares to minimize environmental impact. Purchases made through Cele-Brite will contribute $1 from each sale directly to the CLWA’s efforts.
