New York is set to spend $25 million from state coffers to rent housing for up to 1,250 asylum-seeking families, providing an alternative to the congested shelters in New York City.
This initiative, approved in the state budget last May, stems from a $1 billion fund dedicated to housing and services for the surge of asylum seekers transported to New York City from the southern border over the past year.
According to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office, 17 families have already volunteered for relocation to these state-sponsored homes. The state’s program, which is distinct from New York City’s migrant transfers, will cover rental costs for up to a year and aid families with schooling, health care, and other essentials.
To qualify, families must have sought asylum and work permits from the federal government. Despite handling approximately 100,000 migrants in the past year, New York City has only referred 275 families for this state program after aiding them with their asylum applications, stated a spokesperson for Mayor Eric Adams.
