STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Hailing from Mexico, the Do Portugal Circus is arriving on Staten Island for the first time — ready to enchant residents with performances running from Friday, Aug. 18, through Sunday, Aug. 27.
Commencing in 1911, the traditional classic family-run circus has sustained its legacy through five generations. The Portugal family has toured across North and Central America with talented artists from around the globe — with plans to pass down the circus tradition for many generations to come.
“We’ve been touring along the East Coast, and we’re really just like ‘we want to see everywhere.’ We’re really excited to be here on Staten Island. We want to see all of New York,” said Susan Vance, who has has toured with Do Portugal Circus for eight years as a choreographer, aerialist, dancer and quick-change artist.
Vance, who is originally from Scotland, tours with three generations of Portugal family members who were born into the circus, including mothers, fathers, aunts, cousins and children. She choreographs for a troupe comprised of seven dancers, while also showcasing her talents in the mesmerizing Ariel Silks performance in the show.
One of the newest parts of this year’s circus is the Flying Trapeze, in which a performer seizes the trapeze bar and leaps from a high platform, allowing gravity to orchestrate a swing through the air.
Other astonishing acts include Motorcyclists in the Globe of Death and Bounce Juggling. Clowns, magicians and dancers will enliven the the stage with a diverse array of costumes and styles.
“There’s something for everyone,” Vance said.
