It’s Thursday morning in New York City and a new bill that would make broker fees the responsibility of landlords rather than renters is getting support from a majority of the City Council.
The bill, dubbed the FARE Act, was introduced back in June by Brooklyn Councilman Chi Ossรฉ who received backing from 25 Democratic colleagues to co-sponsor it. The proposal got some obvious pushback from real estate groups, though, who argue the action would be bad for both brokers and landlords, but Ossรฉ says the current system “makes no sense.”

- Several city-run TikTok accounts are no more after NYC announced a ban on the app for government-issued devices.
- A bacteria found in raw shellfish was to blame for the death of a Long Island man as well as two deaths in Connecticut.

- After reports of NYPD car chases skyrocketing during the first half of the year, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey sent an internal memo to some top police officials telling them to ensure their officers are familiar with the departmentโs vehicle pursuit policies.
- Researchers at NYU Langone Health put a pig kidney into a “brain-dead” man and found it to work normally for more than a month, an important step in figuring out how to use animal organs to save human lives.
