The Yankees are back home this weekend to face their biggest rival — the Boston Red Sox — and they’ve returned to some less-than-thrilled fans.
The team is currently 60-61, and it has been 28 years since the team had a losing record this late in the season – meaning many adult fans have never lived through such a poor performance.
The experience was new to Eric Buttleman, a 28-year-old fan living in Prospect Heights who said he’s been attending games since he was two years old.
“It’s a nightmare,” he said. “It’s so difficult to watch.”
On Friday evening, the lifelong fan said he wouldn’t let this year deter him as he made his way to Yankee Stadium wearing a Bronx Bombers jersey and cap.
“Yankee Stadium is like my favorite place on earth,” he said, heading into the subway station. I’m never going to be mad going to Yankees games, but I’m going to lose my mind if we lose to Boston.”
If they don’t improve, this could be the team’s first losing season since 1992.
Yankee fans also expressed frustration online.
“There are no words that anyone on planet earth can say to fix the 2023 Yankees,” said Rational Yankees Fan on X, the site formerly known as Twitter. “They need better players. That’s it.”
Bed-Stuy resident Tyrell James couldn’t make the Friday night game, but was planning to listen to it at work. He said none of his teams are doing great.
“The Yankees ain’t doing good. The Knicks ain’t doing good. No New York team is doing good, I hope they get it together,” James said.
But he was still hopeful for Friday night’s game.
“Every game I’m going in like they’re gonna win,” he said, adding some advice for the players. “Play together, play hard. That’s it.”
The Bombers sit in last place in their division, and are 6.5 games out of a playoff spot in the wildcard race.
