With Buffalo Bills fans clamoring for the team to sign a middle linebacker or further offensive tackle depth, the team went out and added a running back.
In a bit of a surprise move, the Bills are bolstering their running back depth chart signing Ty Johnson. The move comes just a few months after the back tore his pectoral while working out away from the New York Jets’ team facility.
What do Bills fans need to know about Johnson? Here are six things about the newest addition to the roster.
Former 6th round pick
Ty Johnson was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Johnson tested well leading up to the draft with a 4.4 40-yard dash, 34-inch vertical and 27 bench press reps of 225 pounds.
Johnson’s stint in Detroit lasted two seasons. He was claimed by the Jets one day after being waived by Detroit.
Good pass-catching back
Johnson has been effective as a runner when given opportunities, but he’s best known for his pass catching abilities. Johnson has 86 receptions for 668 yards and three touchdowns in his time in the league. His best season came with the Jets in 2021 when he caught 34 passes for 372 yards and two touchdowns.
Averaged over five yards per carry in 2022
Johnson played in all 17 games with the Jets last season. His workload in the offense was minimal, but Johnson was effective when given carries. Last year, Johnson rushed for 160 yards on 30 carries (5.3 YPC) while recording one start for New York.
His best individual effort as a back came in 2020 when he recorded a 22-104-1 stat line on the ground. He put the Jets in position to win their first game that season, but the Raiders would score a touchdown with five seconds remaining to win 31-28.
In his career, Johnson has rushed for 925 yards and four touchdowns on 208 carries (4.4 YPC).
