Mets slugger has nothing but ‘love’ for organization that tried to trade him

Mets first baseman Pete Alonso read the reports that he was within “field goal range” of being dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline just like the rest of us. He indicated as much to reporters after the Mets lost 3-2 to the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.

For the Mets’ lifer, however, nothing has changed, and there’s nowhere else he’d rather be.

“I love representing this organization,” Alonso said after being asked about the report, via SNY. “Being a Met is the only thing I know.”

Alonso is playing for $14.5 million this season and is likely to be awarded more than $20 million in arbitration for next season. He’s batting a career-low .226, but his 39 home runs and 95 RBI rank third and second in MLB respectively. When he hits his 40th home run and drives in his 100th run, he’ll become the first Met ever to post consecutive 40/100 seasons.

The three-time All-Star was drafted by the Mets in 2016. He broke Aaron Judge’s rookie home run record in 2019 when he hit 53 homers, earning him the NL Rookie of the Year award.

Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic said the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs were among the teams in contact with the Mets about the slugger. Rosenthal hints that talks between the Mets and Brewers had more traction than the conversations with the Cubs.

How close did the Mets come to trading him? That’s not clear.

What is clear is Alonso’s adoration for the organization.

“I don’t know what the future holds, but right now, I’m a Met and I love being a Met,” he said. “I take pride in putting on the jersey every day and representing the city of New York.”
