FLORHAM PARK — The New York Jets’ wide receiving core took a hit on Wednesday afternoon even without any major injuries.
Wide receiver Corey Davis has retired from the NFL in an official post from the receiver’s Instagram account. Davis had been away from the team for personal reasons over the last week and Jets head coach Robert Saleh was unclear when he would be back.
“For some time now I’ve been contemplating stepping away from the sport of football. This decision has not been easy. Although I am a deep person, I’m a man of few words. I’ve been searching my heart for what to do and I feel that stepping away from the game is the best path for me at this time,” Davis’ said in his post.
In two seasons with Gang Green, the former Titans wide receiver tallied 66 receptions for 1,028 yards and six scores. He signed a three-year, $37.5 million deal with the Jets back in 2021. He was drafted as the fifth overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Western Michigan. In six seasons, Davis recorded over 400 catches for 17 touchdowns.
“He always has a family here,” head coach Robert Saleh said to Connor Hughes after the news broke. Saleh confirmed the door would be open for Davis to return should he decide to.
“Corey Davis was a true professional on and off the field. He was a great example to our young players of how to come to work every day and put in a complete and consistent day of work. We were fortunate to have him here. We wish him the best moving forward,” general manager Joe Douglas said in a statement.
In his absence, the Jets will be looking to utilize Randall Cobb and undrafted free agents like Malik Turner and Jason Brownlee at the receiver position.
