FerryHawks Notebook: FDNY and NYPD softball teams to meet in charity game at SIUH Community Park

The FerryHawks are in a pennant race and will play the Long Island Ducks on Saturday (Aug. 26) at 6:30 pm with a fireworks show to follow — but prior to that Atlantic League contest, Staten Island University Hospital Community Park will host the FDNY vs. NYPD charity softball game at 3 p.m.

Tickets purchased through the NYPD will support the PBA Widows and Childrens Fund. Tickets purchased through the FDNY will support the MRD Foundation in honor of Firefighter Michael Davidson and the Fire & Drums Foundation in honor of Firefighter William Tolley.

The NYPD Softball Team was started in August of 2021 by team president, Sgt. James Rogers, with help from VP Police Officer Athena Rogers and board member PO Christopher Fesler. Since the teamโ€™s inception, โ€œFinest Softballโ€ has been dedicated to raising money for fallen officers and their families through donations and participating in and hosting fundraiser tournaments.

The FDNY softball team was spawned in 1982 by Vinnie โ€œDa Vinceโ€ Ryan. In 1993, he was joined by Steve Mundinger, who would eventually take the reins from him and ran the team until 2010. Since then, a joint effort has been led by firefighters Walter Gilroy, Mike Wolters, Matt Restivo and Lt. Mike Eddy.

The team plays under the moniker โ€œFDNY Brothers 4 Everโ€.
