Reformed Quiet Riot keeps band’s spirit alive at NYS Fair’s Chevy Court (review, photos)

Invoking the “rock gods,” a new-lineup Quiet Riot rocked out on Thursday night for hundreds of metal-mad fairgoers.

The band took the Chevy Court stage at 6 p.m. with “Run For Cover,” and the wild stage-lights brightened up the overcast evening. Quiet Riot’s 2023 tour commemorates the 40th anniversary of their 1983 album Metal Health, (the first metal album to top the Billboard charts), which featured heavily throughout the set. Bassist Rudy Sarzo is the only current member who originally played on that album, but the new members delivered a solid performance true to the Quiet Riot that rocketed to stardom 40 years ago.

After finishing “Mama Weer All Crazee Now,” lead singer Jizzy Pearl said, “Good crowd, and so far no rain – the rock gods are smiling on us!” The band then played a newer track “I Can’t Hold On” before showcasing classic hits from their heyday, including “Sign of the Times” and “Condition Critical.”

Then, Quiet Riot paid tribute to one of the band’s founders, rock god Randy Rhoads, who left the band in 1979 to join Ozzy Osbourne’s new solo band. Rhoads’ guitar work on Osbourne’s first two albums helped the singer achieve superstardom after leaving Black Sabbath, but the young guitarist’s life was cut short in 1982.

Sarzo had been playing bass for Osbourne at the time of Rhoads’ death, and reconnected with Quiet Riot to write “Thunderbird” in tribute to their friend and former bandmate, and these sessions led to Sarzo rejoining the band and helping to record their breakthrough album. So, “Thunderbird” was the perfect tribute for Rhoads and other deceased core members of Quiet Riot – such as drummer Frankie Banali – and the band dedicated the song to all of the former band members that have passed away. It was a moving tribute that spurred big cheers from the audience.
