FerryHawks fall to Blue Crabs, 12-4, in series finale

The Staten Island FerryHawks, after splitting the first two games of the series against Southern Maryland this week, dropped the rubber match by a 12-4 count to the Blue Crabs on Thursday. The Hawks (22-19) fell to third place, while the Blue Crabs (23-18) sit alone in second.

Both clubs trail first-place Lancaster (24-17), with just two games separating the three clubs in the Atlantic Leagueโ€™s North Division.

Staten Island sent left-hander Jesse Remington to the mound on Thursday night in St. George and he was greeted by a leadoff home run off the bat of Jack Sundberg, his ninth of the year. Remington settled down until the fourth inning, when the Blue Crabs exploded for four more runs — courtesy of RBI doubles from Jimmy Kerrigan, KC Hobson, and Phillip Caulfield.

The FerryHawks responded in the home half of the frame, plating three runs on RBI singles from Justin Williams and Jack Elliott, as well as an RBI double from Roldani Baldwin, to trim the deficit to 5-3.

Souther Maryland tacked on two more runs in the fifth via Braxton Leeโ€™s RBI double and another run came around to score on a fielderโ€™s choice. FerryHawksโ€™ slugger Chris Brito drove in a run in the home half of the frame to pull within 7-4.

But Staten Island would draw no closer.

Lee stroked a sac fly in the sixth and the Crabs piled on four more runs in the ninth. Kerrigan belted his fourth dinger of the year, Sundberg laced an RBI knock, and Ian Yetsko clubbed a two-run double to cap the output.

Remington (L, 5-5) was charged with the loss while Spencer Johnson earned the win, improving his season record to 4-4.

NOTES: The FerryHawks continue their push for the playoffs this weekend as they host the Long Island Ducks at SIUH Community Park. Tickets can be purchased www.ferryhawks.com. Saturday nightโ€™s game features a fireworks show after the game and on Sunday there will be a โ€œTouch A Truckโ€ festival before the game and kids run the bases after the game.
