Yankees take series opener from Tigers behind Luis Severino’s seven shutout frames

Luis Severino turned in another strong outing, and the New York Yankees (63-68) picked up a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers (59-72) in the series opener on Monday night at Comerica Park.

Severino tossed seven shutout frames while allowing five hits and striking out eight. The right-hander has not allowed a run over his last two outings (13 2/3 IP) after having an ERA over eight, which at the time was the worst in Major League Baseball.

Gleyber Torres hit his 21st home run of the season and added an RBI double. Aaron Judge smacked his 29th homer, while Oswaldo Cabrera chipped in with a run-scoring single.

The Yankees will hand the ball to Michael King Tuesday as they look to take the first two games of the four-game series in Detroit. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
