STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — If you’re a last-minute back-to-school shopper frantically loading your cart with pencils, notebooks, folders and glue, get ready for the sticker shock: School supply costs are surging this year, and according to a new National Retail Federation report, the average family can expect to spend close to $1,000 on the basics.
“Families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $890.07 on back-to-school items this year, approximately $25 more than last year’s record of $864.35, and a new high,” the report noted.
