Following the July resignation of Democrat Renée Sutton, Douglas Merrill has been chosen to take up the at-large City Council seat.
The appointment, slated for Sept. 5, came after Council interviews with five potential candidates on Aug. 29. Merrill, a Democrat, will occupy the seat until Dec. 31, 2024. If he wishes to continue for the final year of Sutton’s term, he will need to run for re-election in 2024.
Merrill, who enjoys a distinguished academic history, is a professor emeritus from the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he dedicated four decades to biomedical science before his retirement in 2020. Beyond academia, he holds positions with the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association board, the Canandaigua Rotary Club, and the city’s Board of Assessment Review, with his term for the latter ending Sept. 30, 2024. The Council will convene at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Hurley Building.
