An early-morning shooting in South Richmond Hill on Saturday left a 31-year-old man dead and a suspect on the lam, police reported.
Law enforcement sources said the murder happened at about 4:19 a.m. on Sept. 2 near a home on 125th Street, just south of 101st Avenue.
Officers from the 102nd Precinct, in responding to a 911 call about a man shot, found the 31-year-old victim with a bullet wound to his chest.
EMS rushed him to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Police have yet to release his identity, pending family notification.
Long after sunrise Saturday, NYPD Crime Scene Unit officers and detectives were still combing the crime scene for evidence.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown and under investigation. Sources familiar with the investigation, citing witness statements, are looking for a man with a medium complexion, wearing a green shirt and gray pants, who was seen fleeing the scene after the shots were fired.
The 102nd Precinct had reported four homicides year-to-date through Aug. 27, one more than the number at this point in 2022, according to the most recent CompStat report. Shooting incidents, however, have decreased in 2023 from 7 to 5, as have the number of shooting victims, from 12 to 7.
