HOPEWELL JUNCTION – A 48-year-old Hopewell Junction resident has been arrested for DWI after a Thursday afternoon accident in Hopewell Junction. The accident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. near the intersection of Sylvan Lake Road and Route 82.
Christopher Garcia is facing charges of DWI and leaving the scene of an accident after an initial investigation by state troopers.
A witness had called 911 after watching a car leave the roadway and strike a house near the intersection. The witness then told the emergency dispatchers that the driver exited the vehicle, inspected the damage, and then backed his d car away and fled the scene. The caller gave a description of the driver and the vehicle as well as the direction he had driven away in.
Police inspected the home and summoned town building officials to check for structural damage. Troopers then spent approximately two hours canvassing the area in search of the car with visible damage. At almost two hours from the time the accident was reported, the car was located in the Chelsea Cove community. The driver had parked the vehicle in a way that the damage would not be noticed by passersby.
The trooper located Garcia and, after a brief investigation, he was arrested and taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
