FerryHawks’ playoffs hopes diminish after 6-5 loss to 1st-place Lancaster

LANCASTER, Pa. — The Staten Island FerryHawks lost a heartbreaker on Wednesday night when Chris Proctor singled home Chad Sedio with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to carry the Barnstormers to a 6-5 Atlantic League victory at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the win, the Barnstormers (31-22 in the second half) remained one game ahead of Southern Maryland and six ahead of the FerryHawks (25-28) in the Atlantic League’s North Division chase with 10 games remaining on the schedule. FerryHawks right-fielder Ricardo Cespedes opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with his fifth homer of the season – a solo shot to right-centerfield off Lancaster starter Brent Teller.

The Barnstormers answered in the bottom second, scoring four runs on an RBI double by Trayvon Robinson, a Jack Conley sacrifice fly and a bunt RBI single off the bat of Melvin Mercedes that scored Trace Loehr.

Aguilar crossed home on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-3, and Brito came home with the tying run on Luis Castro’s base hit to left. The inning ended when the Barnstormers allowed Cespedes’ infield pop up to land off to the first base side of the mound, but Castro was nabbed rounding second.

Lancaster went ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth when Loehr led off with a double down the right-field line and scored on Andretty Cordero’s two-out single up the middle.

Garrett Granitz tossed two perfect innings of relief to maintain the lead. In the top of the eighth, Aguilar, the Atlantic League Player of the Month for August, hit a long homer to left center to tie it up. Barnstormer reliever Nick Duron (2-0) survived Ricardo Cespedes’ leadoff double in…
