North Syracuse man killed in crash on Interstate 81 near Tully, police say

Tully, NY — A 49-year-old North Syracuse man was killed Wednesday afternoon when his pickup truck went off the shoulder of Interstate 81 and hit a metal guide rail, police said.

Oleg Stepaniuk was transported by Tully ambulance to Upstate University Hospital where he was pronounced dead after the crash, according to New York State Police.

Police said Stepaniuk was driving northbound on I-81 near Tully shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in a 2018 Ram pickup truck pulling a trailer when he went off the west shoulder and hit the guide rail. The truck then continued north and struck an earth embankment before coming to a complete stop, troopers said.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine an official cause of death. Police said the driver may have suffered a medical event leading to the crash.

The investigation is continuing.
