The City of Hornell has greenlit a significant $2.968 million project aimed at revitalizing its downtown district.
The city accepted the bid from C.P. Ward in a special August meeting, marking the next phase of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative.
Partnering with LaBella Engineering, the project focuses on enhancing Hornell’s downtown aesthetic and functionality, including the renovation of sidewalks, benches, and trees. Additionally, the district will see new lighting installations, ensuring a blend of modernity and the city’s traditional ambiance.
Spanning from Center Street to Seneca Street on Main Street and along Broadway, the revitalization effort will incorporate public art pieces, redefined parking areas, improved curb ramps, and freshly painted crosswalks.
Alleyway enhancements will also be a part of the project, spotlighting areas between Seneca Street and Genesee Street, and between Seneca Street and Maple City Drive. Visitors can expect to see new sidewalks, murals, concrete planters, and overhead lighting installations. Mayor John Buckley highlighted the importance of wayfinding and signage to help guide tourists.
Although the exact timeline is yet to be finalized, preliminary plans suggest the project might kick off this fall and conclude within a year. The city assures minimal disruptions during construction, promising to liaise closely with affected businesses.
