STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The New York City civil service exam schedule is open for September, and some jobs pay more than others.
The application period for exams opened Sept. 6.
Exam applications currently open include: accountant; addiction counselor (NYC H+H); associate inspector (highways and sewers); correction officer; electrical engineer; landmarks preservationist; mechanical engineer; police administrative aide; police communications technician; school safety agent.
Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System (OASys) or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers (CTAC).
Here are the starting salaries, deadlines and job descriptions for each career.
Accountant
Salary: $54,874
Job description, according to DCAS: Accountants, under supervision, perform professional accounting work of moderate difficulty and responsibility internally in City agencies or in conducting field audits and investigations; work independently or with others in executing responsible accounting assignments following prescribed rules of procedure.

Addiction counselor (NYC H+H)
Salary: $54,026
Job description, according to DCAS: Addiction Counselors (NYC H+H), under supervision, with latitude for the exercise of initiative and judgment, participate in the development and implementation of clinically sound, culturally relevant, and medically monitored treatment programs, case management, care coordination and other supportive and consultative services for patients in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment (e.g., medicated assisted treatment (MAT), ancillary withdrawal, etc.) and promote the notion of recovery and self-sufficiency, as a goal of treatment.
