Crosswalk or speed bump? Staten Island drivers will want to slow down at this high-trafficked intersection

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A hybrid speed bump/crosswalk was recently installed at a busy intersection in Bay Terrace, causing many Staten Island drivers to hit the brakes when they actually should be accelerating.

The hump of asphalt was poured and painted at the corner of Buffalo Street and Hylan Boulevard, months after the city Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a borough-wide blitz to slow down speeding motorists and bolster roadway safety in April.

The agency has installed new speed bumps at more than a dozen locations so far this year. But thereโ€™s a problem with this roadway elevation. Itโ€™s located on a corner, not in the middle of the street. And if drivers hit the gas as they turn onto Hylan, they could potentially bottom out.

Earlier this year, the DOT provided a list of all the new speed bumps that have been, or will be, installed across Staten Island in 2023. Buffalo Street was not on their original agenda, but hereโ€™s a look at the locations that were:

  • Hillside Terrace, from Amboy Road to Hylan Boulevard
  • Tysens Lane, from Amboy Road to Riedel Avenue
  • North Railroad Street, from Annadale Road to Albee Avenue
  • Robinson Avenue, from Old Amboy Road to Oakdale Street
  • Robinson Avenue, from Sycamore Street to Oakdale Street
  • Grantwood Avenue, from Annadale Road to Ionia Avenue
  • Hunter Avenue, from Hylan Boulevard to Father Capodanno Boulevard
  • Armstrong Avenue, from Hylan Boulevard to King Street
  • Warren Street, from Hill Street to Coursen Court
