Sarah Jaques scored a man-up goal with 5:49 to go, Emma Capanna caused a turnover by Shonly Wallace with 12 seconds on the clock and No. 18 Stanford escaped the upset bid with a 21-20 victory over visiting UAlbany on Sunday in a women’s lacrosse nonleague contest.
The Great Danes, who led 14-8 at halftime and 17-16 going into the final period, could not stop the Cardinal duo of Jaques (five goals, two assists) and star sophomore Annabel Frist (eight goals, one assist).
Wallace put the Great Danes on the scoreboard first with two goals in the first three minutes. Katie Pascale put UAlbany up 3-0 at the 11:27 mark before Frist finally put the Cardinal on the scoreboard a minute later. After Stanford tied the game at 3 goals apiece, Pascale scored her second goal of the game on an unassisted effort, followed by a goal from Grace McCauley with 3:19 on the clock to give the Great Danes a 5-3 lead. Stanford score made it 5-4 with two minutes to go before Allie Maloney put UAlbany in front 6-4 with 27 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Great Danes then scored the first three goals of the second quarter before Jaques scored her first of the game off an assist from Frist to pull Stanford within 9-5 with 11:15 to go before the half.
Wallace then scored the next three goals to put the Great Danes in front 12-5. The teams then traded goals before Pascale made it 14-8 with 1:34 to go before the break.
Unfortunately for UAlbany the Cardinal chipped away in the second half, with Frist tying the game at 15-all at the 6:34 mark of the third for her sixth goal of the game.
Wallace and McCauley then each scored to put UAlbany back in front before another score from Frist made it 17-16 entering the fourth quarter.
