A 59-year-old woman was in critical condition on Friday after a cyclist on an e-bike traveling in the wrong direction up 2nd Avenue in Manhattan struck her and then fled the scene, officials said.
Police said the collision took place just after 7:30 in the morning at Second Avenue and 38th Street.
A preliminary investigation found that an unidentified man was traveling the wrong way, northbound up the southbound-running street, when he hit the woman who was crossing the street there.
The impact of the crash knocked the woman to the ground, leaving her unconscious, police said. The man did not remain on scene.
The woman was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, according to police.
An arrest has not yet been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
“We’re devastated to hear that a pedestrian was injured this morning in a hit and run by an e-bike rider in Manhattan,โ said Danny Harris, the executive director of Transportation Alternatives, in a statement. The nonprofit organization advocates for safer streets.
โVision Zero envisions a New York City with zero traffic fatalities or injuries, and all road users, including cyclists, must be cautious of our most vulnerable street users: pedestrians, children, older adults, and those with limited abilities. We will continue to fight for safe streets for all โ especially pedestrians โ and dedicated space to keep New Yorkers safe from traffic violence,” he added.
