6 New York pizzerias selected by Italian pizza authority for list of best in the world

They’re telling us what we already know.

50 Top Pizzas, an Italian pizza authority founded by a group of food and beverage journalists, released its annual list of the best pizzerias in Italy, Europe, Asia and the United States, and five New York City pizzerias were named in the organization’s top 100 picks.

Taking the No. 2 slot overall was Una Pizza Napoletana, Chef Anthony Mangieri’s acclaimed spot on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side for its 12-inch, wood-fired Neapolitan pies. Earlier this year, 50 Top Pizzas named Una Pizza Napoletana the No. 1 pizzeria in America.

Landing at the 22nd overall spot was Ribalta on East 12th Street near Union Square, followed by No. 33 Song’ E Napule on West Houston Street in the West Village and No. 72 Kesté on Fulton Street, very close to the Staten Island Ferry’s Whitehall Terminal. Rounding out the USA contingent was Ops on Himrod Street, the only Brooklyn selection, at No. 92.

The only other New York pizzeria to make the cut was Jay’s Artisan Pizzeria in Buffalo, which landed at No. 28.

If you lost count, that’s four pizzerias from Manhattan, one from Brooklyn, one from Upstate New York — and none from Staten Island (cue the eye roll).

Other U.S. pizzerias that made the list include: Jersey City’s Razza Pizza Artigianale (No. 11); Portland, Oregon’s Ken’s Artisan Pizza (No. 18); San Francisco’s Tony’s Pizza Napoletana (No. 19); Phoenix, Arizona’s Pizzeria Bianco (No. 21); Miami’s 0′ Munaciello (No. 25) and La Leggenda Pizzeria (No. 73); Wakefield, Rhode Island’s Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana (No. 76); Chicago’s Spacca Napoli Pizzeria (No. 93); and Tampa’s Fabrica Pizza (No. 97).

As for the pizzeria that can call itself the best in the world? Well, 50 Top Pizzas couldn’t pick just one. Co-honors go to Italy’s 10 Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria and I Masanielli–Francesco Martucci. Both spots were also crowned co-champs earlier this year on the list of best pizzerias in Italy.
